About Irache
Irache is a small historic stop on the Camino Francés, just after Ayegui and before Azqueta. It is not a large town, but it is one of the most memorable places on this stage because of its monastery, winery, and famous Wine Fountain.
The Monastery of Irache is one of the important historic pilgrim sites in Navarra. Its origins go back to the early Middle Ages, and it was run by Benedictine monks for centuries. The monastery was known for welcoming pilgrims, and its old hospital tradition made Irache a significant place of rest on the route to Santiago.
For pilgrims today, the best-known stop is the Wine Fountain at Bodegas Irache, beside the Camino route. The fountain has two taps, one for wine and one for water. It is a symbolic gesture of hospitality for pilgrims, but the wine is limited each day, so it is best treated as a small taste rather than something to rely on.
Irache is mainly a short stop rather than an overnight village. Pilgrims usually pause here to see the monastery, visit the fountain, take photos, refill water, and then continue toward Azqueta and Villamayor de Monjardín.
