Lisbon → Alpriate

22.5 km | 5-8 hours | +441m / -456m

About This Stage

The walk out of Lisbon begins at the cathedral (Se de Lisboa) and follows the Tagus River estuary northeast through a mix of urban neighbourhoods and riverside promenades. After passing through Sacavem and crossing the Trancao River, the route transitions from city streets to quieter suburban paths leading into Alpriate.

This opening day is a gradual farewell to the capital. The riverside sections offer flat, easy walking with views across the Tagus, though urban navigation requires attention to waymarks through built-up areas. Pilgrims starting from the cathedral should budget time for the initial city section, which can feel slow due to traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.

Alpriate is a small residential town with limited services. Most pilgrims push on or arrange accommodation in nearby Alverca, which has more options for food and lodging.

Terrain: Urban roads, riverside paths, some cobblestone, short dirt trail sections
