Things to Do in Pontedeume

Sightseeing

Cross the Medieval Bridge

The original bridge across the Eume estuary was one of the longest medieval bridges in Galicia. Walk along the remaining section and imagine the river crossing as medieval pilgrims experienced it. The views across the estuary from the modern bridge are beautiful, especially in the morning light.

Sightseeing

Climb to the Iglesia de Santiago

Perched above the old town, this church has a carved Romanesque doorway and a peaceful churchyard with views over the estuary and the surrounding hills. The climb up is short but steep. Most pilgrims walk right past the entrance without realising it is there.

History

See the Torrejon dos Andrade

The remains of the 14th-century Andrade family tower stand above the town. The Andrades were one of the most powerful noble families in medieval Galicia and controlled much of this coastline. The tower is partially ruined but its presence still dominates the skyline. Look for the wild boar carvings, the family's heraldic symbol.

Food & Drink

Eat Fresh Seafood

Pontedeume sits on the estuary and the seafood is excellent. Try the pulpo, the grilled fish, or the local shellfish at one of the restaurants on the main square. The morning market sells fresh produce if you prefer to self-cater. The bars on the plaza are the social hub of the town and fill up as pilgrims arrive in the afternoon.

Relaxation

Walk to Playa Magdalena

If you arrived via the Camino from Ferrol, you walked past this beach on the way in. If you missed it, it is worth walking back. A beautiful sandy beach on the estuary, sheltered and calm. On a warm afternoon, some pilgrims swim here. Even if you just sit on the sand and watch the water, it is a lovely way to end the day.
