Clothing and Layers for the Camino de Santiago

Pack light, stay comfortable, and be ready for anything from scorching Meseta heat to rainy Galician mornings.

The Golden Rule: No Cotton

Cotton absorbs moisture, takes forever to dry, and causes chafing when wet. Every item you pack for walking should be synthetic or merino wool.

Save one cotton t-shirt for evenings if you like, but never walk in it.

The Layering System

01

Base Layer

Sits against your skin. Regulates temperature and wicks moisture. Merino wool or synthetic.

02

Mid Layer

Provides insulation. A lightweight fleece or merino long-sleeve for cool mornings and at altitude.

03

Outer Layer

Protects against wind and rain. A waterproof, breathable shell. See the Rain Gear guide.

How Much to Pack

You only need 2 to 3 of each item. Laundry facilities are available in most Camino towns. Pack for 2 to 3 days, not 30.

The classic pilgrim wardrobe: 2-3 walking shirts, 1 pair of trousers or convertibles, 1 pair of shorts, 2-3 pairs of underwear, 1 base layer, 1 mid layer.

Merino Wool vs Synthetic: The Debate

Merino Wool

  • +Naturally odour-resistant (wear 2-3 days)
  • +Temperature regulating in heat and cold
  • +Soft and non-irritating against skin
  • -More expensive per item
  • -Slightly slower to dry
  • -Less durable over repeated washing

Synthetic (Polyester/Nylon)

  • +Cheaper and extremely durable
  • +Dries fastest of any fabric
  • +Wide availability and variety
  • -Holds odour after repeated use
  • -Can feel clammy against skin
  • -Odour can become permanent over weeks

Our take: Merino is worth the investment for the Camino. The odour resistance alone makes a huge difference when sharing albergue dorms for 30 nights.

Walking Pants and Shorts

You need 1 pair of walking trousers and 1 pair of shorts, or 1 pair of convertible zip-off pants. Key features: lightweight, quick-dry, stretch fabric.

Convertible pants save weight and pack space. If you care about looking presentable, dedicated slim hiking trousers paired with shorts is the better combination.

Sun Hat and Head Protection

The Meseta has almost no shade for days. A wide-brimmed sun hat with UPF protection is not optional for spring, summer, or autumn Caminos.

A neck cape provides extra sun protection. A Buff or bandana is useful for sun, sweat, cold mornings, and wind.
