About This Stage
The path descends from Lauzerte through rolling agricultural country to Moissac, home to one of France's greatest Romanesque monuments. The terrain is moderately hilly through farmland and woodland.
The Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Moissac has a cloister considered the finest surviving example of Romanesque sculpture in the world. The 76 carved marble capitals depict biblical scenes with extraordinary detail and expression. The south portal tympanum, showing Christ in Majesty surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists, is a masterwork. UNESCO recognised both as World Heritage.
The town sits on the Canal de Garonne, and the canal towpath provides peaceful walking.
Terrain: Steep descent from hilltop, rolling agricultural paths, river valley approach, town streets
