Things to Do in A Gudiña

Camino Moment

Welcome to Galicia

A Gudina is the first Galician town on the Camino Sanabres. You crossed from Castilla y Leon over the mountain passes and descended into a different world. The language shifts to Galician. The architecture changes to granite and slate. The landscape is greener, the forests denser, and the air cooler. If you started in Sevilla, you have walked through Andalucia, Extremadura, Castilla y Leon, and now Galicia. Four regions, four climates, four cultures. Santiago is still 280 km away, but you are in

Relaxation

Rest and Resupply

A Gudina is not a town of sights and monuments. It is a place to rest after the mountain crossings and to prepare for the remote stages ahead. Have a good dinner, sleep well, and stock up on food and water. The next reliable services are not until Laza (35 km ahead) or even Ourense (90 km ahead via the main route). The stages through the Galician highlands are beautiful but isolated. A Gudina is your last chance to resupply properly.

Food & Drink

Eat Galician Food for the First Time

If you have been walking from Sevilla, A Gudina is your introduction to Galician cuisine. Try the caldo gallego (broth with greens, potatoes, and pork), the empanada (savoury pie), and the local cheeses. The pulpo a feira (Galician-style octopus) may appear on some menus. The bread is excellent. The wine switches from the bold Toro reds of Zamora to the lighter Galician wines. The food change is one of the markers of the regional transition.

Camino Moment

Last ATM Warning

A Gudina has the last ATM before Ourense, which is still 90 km away. Depending on your staging, that could be three or four days of walking. Withdraw enough cash to cover accommodation, food, and any emergencies for the next section. Some small villages along the route accept only cash. This is one of the most remote and least serviced sections of any major Camino route. Financial preparation is not optional.
