About Calzada del Coto
Calzada del Coto is a small village in the province of Leon, a few kilometres west of Sahagun. It sits on the flat meseta of Tierra de Campos and marks the point where the Camino Frances splits into two parallel variants for the next stretch.
The village takes its name from its position on the calzada, the old Roman road, and from el coto, an old term for an enclosed common land. The parish church of San Esteban is built in brick, in keeping with the local Mudejar tradition. The village's significance on the Camino is primarily as a route junction that has guided pilgrims one way or another for centuries.
Services are limited. The municipal albergue, the Albergue San Roque, has dormitory beds and a kitchen. There is a bar and a small shop with limited hours. There is no pharmacy, no ATM, and no medical service. The nearest full services are back in Sahagun.
From here, the southern route through Bercianos and El Burgo Ranero is the busier and more popular option, with more albergues and easier access to services. The northern Camino Real, through Calzadilla de los Hermanillos, is quieter, follows the line of the old Roman road, and has fewer services. Both routes reach Mansilla de las Mulas in the same number of days.
