About Granja de Moreruela

Granja de Moreruela is a village notable for the ruins of the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Moreruela, one of the earliest Cistercian foundations in Spain (12th century). The ruined church and cloister are atmospheric and historically significant.

The village has an albergue, a bar, and very basic services. Granja de Moreruela is also a key decision point on the Via de la Plata: here the route splits, with one variant heading northwest through Ourense (the Camino Sanabres) and the other continuing north to Astorga to join the Camino Frances.

Your stage data follows the northern variant to Astorga.
