Things to Do in Puebla de Sanabria

Sightseeing

Climb to the Castle

The Castillo de los Condes de Benavente is the crowning glory of Puebla de Sanabria. Climb the steep path from the lower town to the hilltop, enter through the gates, and climb the keep. From the top, the views stretch across the valley, the rivers below, and the mountains to the west. On a clear day, you can see the Sierra de la Culebra to the south and the Galician mountains that you will be crossing in the days ahead. The castle museum provides historical context, but the views alone are wort

History

Walk the Walled Old Town

The old quarter inside the walls is a declared Historic-Artistic Site. The cobbled lanes wind between stone houses with slate roofs, iron balconies, and wooden doors. The Iglesia de Santa Maria del Azougue has a 12th-century Romanesque portal with carved figures that is one of the finest on the route. The old town is small enough to walk in twenty minutes but rich enough to linger in. The quiet, the stone, and the sense of age create an atmosphere that rewards slow exploration.

Food & Drink

Eat Hearty Sanabrean Food

Puebla de Sanabria sits in a region known for its robust mountain cuisine. The habones (large white beans), the local beef, the trout from the rivers, and the homemade desserts are the staples. The restaurants in the lower town serve pilgrim menus at fair prices. Eat well tonight. The mountain stages ahead are long and services are limited. A full stomach and a good night's sleep are the best preparation for the pass crossings.

Camino Moment

Prepare for the Mountains

The next two stages cross the highest points on the Camino Sanabres: the Padornelo pass (1,329m) and the A Canda pass (1,262m). The climbing is significant, the terrain is exposed, and services between Puebla de Sanabria and A Gudina are very limited. There is no ATM for the next 90 km until Ourense. Buy water, food, and cash before you leave. Check the weather forecast. The mountain crossings are beautiful but demanding. Puebla de Sanabria is your staging post.

Relaxation

Visit the Lago de Sanabria (Optional)

About 10 km north of the town, the Lago de Sanabria is the largest natural glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula. Surrounded by mountains and forests, the lake is pristine and peaceful. A detour here requires transport (bus or taxi) but if you have a rest day in Puebla, the lake is well worth the trip. Swimming in a glacial lake surrounded by mountains is an experience that belongs to a different world from the dusty plains of Extremadura that you walked through a few weeks ago.
