About Rabé de las Calzadas
Rabé de las Calzadas is a small village in Burgos province on the Camino Francés, between Tardajos and Hornillos del Camino. For pilgrims, it is the last small settlement before the route fully opens into the Meseta on the way to Hornillos.
The name “de las Calzadas” means “of the roads” or “of the causeways,” and points to the old routes that passed through this area. The village is often linked with Roman roads and later Camino traffic across the Castilian plain. Its main historic sight is the Church of San Pedro, and the village also has a quiet, traditional feel with stone houses and open views.
Rabé de las Calzadas has useful but limited pilgrim services. It has accommodation, a couple of bars, a fountain, and basic facilities, but it is not a full resupply town. Pilgrims should not expect a supermarket, pharmacy, ATM, or a wide choice of restaurants.
The important thing here is preparation. After Rabé, the Camino crosses open fields toward Hornillos del Camino, with little shade and few services. It is a good place to refill water, eat something, and make sure you are ready for the Meseta.
