About Saint-Privat-d'Allier

Saint-Privat-d'Allier is a small village perched above the gorge of the River Allier, the first overnight stop on Le Chemin du Puy from Le Puy-en-Velay. The village has a ruined castle and commanding views over the volcanic Auvergne landscape.

Pilgrims will find a gite d'etape, a small hotel, cafes, and basic services. The village is quiet and atmospheric.

The walk from Le Puy to Saint-Privat is an undulating introduction to the route, crossing through forests and farmland with views of the Allier valley. The terrain gives a taste of the varied walking to come.

Things to Do in Saint-Privat-d'Allier

Relaxation

Look Down into the Gorges de l'Allier

The village sits on the edge of the Allier gorges, one of the wildest river valleys in France. The Allier runs far below, carving through dark volcanic rock. Walk to the edge of the village in the evening and look down. The gorges are deep, forested, and largely uninhabited. Tomorrow's stage descends into them, crosses the river at Monistrol-d'Allier, and climbs back out the other side. It is the most physically demanding stage between Le Puy and Conques. Tonight, just admire the view.

Sightseeing

Visit the Romanesque Church

The church of Saint-Privat is a sturdy Romanesque building in dark volcanic stone, typical of the Haute-Loire. The interior is simple and cool. The thick walls and small windows were designed to withstand the harsh winters at 875 metres. Churches like this served as both spiritual centres and physical shelters for centuries of mountain communities. Get your credential stamped here.

Food & Drink

Eat Your First Communal Gite Dinner

Most gites d'etape on Le Chemin du Puy offer demi-pension, which includes a communal dinner and breakfast. Dinner is typically a three or four-course meal served at a shared table: soup, a main course (often local meat or lentils), cheese, and dessert, with wine and bread. The food is home-cooked and hearty. The conversation around the table, a mix of languages, Camino stories, and tired laughter, is the beginning of the social life of the walk. If this is your first night in a gite, savour the

Camino Moment

Reflect on Your First Day

You walked 23 km today, climbed over 600 metres, crossed the volcanic Devès plateau, and arrived in a village of 400 people on the edge of a gorge. This morning you received a blessing in one of the great cathedrals of France. Tonight you are eating dinner with strangers in a stone house in the mountains. The contrast is deliberate. The Chemin du Puy strips away the familiar from the very first day. Let the quiet settle around you. Tomorrow it gets harder.
