About Terradillos de los Templarios

Terradillos de los Templarios is a tiny village deep in the Meseta, historically associated with the Knights Templar who once controlled this territory. According to local legend, a mythical golden egg laid by a magical goose is buried somewhere in the village.

The village has a couple of albergues and a bar/restaurant. Services are very basic.

Despite its small size, Terradillos provides a welcome stopping point after the lonely 17 km stretch from Carrion de los Condes. The flat, open landscape of the Meseta stretches in every direction.

Things to Do in Terradillos de los Templarios

History

Ponder the Knights Templar

The village takes its name from the Knights Templar, who maintained a commandery here during the 12th and 13th centuries to protect pilgrims on this exposed section of the Meseta. Nothing visible remains of the Templar buildings, but the name itself is a reminder that for medieval pilgrims this was dangerous territory. Bandits, extreme weather, and the sheer emptiness of the plain made this one of the most feared stretches of the route.

Camino Moment

Watch the Sky

Terradillos sits in the middle of the Meseta with nothing but fields in every direction. At night, with no light pollution, the sky is extraordinary. If the weather is clear, step outside after dinner and look up. You may see more stars here than you have seen in your entire life. The Milky Way is clearly visible on a good night. This is one of the hidden gifts of walking through apparently empty landscapes.

Food & Drink

Eat at the Albergue

The albergues in Terradillos serve communal meals that are among the most sociable on the Camino. A long table, a simple set menu, and a room full of pilgrims who have all just walked 26 km across flat, hot, featureless terrain together. The food is basic Castilian fare but the company is what makes it memorable.

Relaxation

Rest Your Legs

There is very little to do in Terradillos, and that is perfectly fine. You have just walked one of the longest and most exposed stages on the Meseta. Sit on a bench, stretch, drink water, and let the tiredness settle. Sometimes the most productive thing a pilgrim can do is nothing at all.
