About Villar De Mazarife

Villar de Mazarife sits in the province of Leon on the southern Camino variant. It is the traditional end of stage 21 for pilgrims taking the Mazarife route. The Camino runs through the heart of the village.

Villar de Mazarife was founded as a pilgrim settlement in the 12th century, traditionally under the patronage of the Knights Templar, who held property in the area along with Cistercian and Hospitaller orders that operated pilgrim hospices along this stretch of the route. The parish church of Santiago dates from the late medieval period and contains imagery of the warrior-saint Santiago Matamoros. The village has been a pilgrim stop continuously since the Middle Ages and remains a quieter overnight option between Leon and Hospital de Orbigo.

Villar de Mazarife has albergues including the donativo Albergue San Antonio de Padua, the Albergue Tio Pepe, and the Albergue Jesus, alongside bar-restaurants and a small shop. There is no pharmacy, no ATM, and no medical service.
