Albergue A Reboleira de Fonfria

Perched at 1,300 metres in the hills of Os Ancares, A Reboleira sits on one of the more demanding stretches of the French Way, in the small hamlet of Fonfría. The property was originally a working cow farm, and that agricultural past is still readable in the bones of the place, now transformed by a local family into a pilgrim hostel with several accommodation options ranging from dormitories to private rooms and a self-contained apartment.

The centrepiece of the complex is a palloza built in 1999, modelled on the ancient Celtic round-house style that was once common across this part of Galicia and the wider Iberian northwest. These thick-walled, thatched structures predate Roman settlement in the region, and a number of original examples survive nearby at O Cebreiro. The palloza at A Reboleira is used as a communal dining space, and the evening meals held there have become something of a local institution on this section of the Camino. Pilgrims from different countries end up sharing a table, swapping stories, and eating together before the next day's walking.

The property comprises dormitory rooms with shared facilities, private hotel-style rooms in the main hostel, the Casa Rural Núñez with individual/double/triple rooms, and O Forno apartment. Famous for communal dinners in the unique 1999-built Palloza (traditional Celtic-style building) where guests from around the world share meals and experiences.

Fonfría itself is little more than a scattering of stone houses at altitude, which means the hostel functions as a genuine refuge rather than a stopover in a larger town. The elevation and the surrounding landscape of the Ancares make this a good place to pause, particularly for those who have just crossed or are preparing to cross the demanding terrain around O Cebreiro.
