Donativo pilgrim albergue in Cacabelos, open March to September, offering donativo wooden cabins for two beside the church of the Virgen de las Angustias, with breakfast and a shared outdoor kitchen area.
Donativo
Tucked against the church of the Virgen de las Angustias on the eastern edge of Cacabelos, this municipal pilgrim hostel sits in the El Bierzo region of León, a fertile wine-producing valley that walkers pass through on the final stretch before Galicia. The sanctuary itself lends the site a quiet, contemplative character that sets it apart from busier town-centre albergues.
Open from late March through September, the hostel is run by volunteer hospitaleros from the Spanish Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago and operates on a donativo basis, meaning pilgrims contribute what they can. The setup consists of prefabricated wooden cabins, each sleeping two people in low beds, which offer a bit more privacy than a standard dormitory. A simple breakfast is included.
The outdoor dining area is a practical and sociable space, with a microwave, refrigerator, electric kettle, and basic kitchenware available for those who want to prepare their own meals. The hostel does not accept reservations, so arrival from 14:00 is first-come, first-served. It is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has a bicycle shed for those cycling the route. Management changed in 2025, so minor details may differ from older accounts.
