Albergue de Peregrinos de Ponte de Lima

Ponte de Lima's pilgrim hostel sits at a natural crossroads on the Portuguese Way, in a town that has welcomed pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela since the Middle Ages. The hostel was opened by the municipality on 18 July 2009, formalising what Ponte de Lima has offered informally for centuries: a place to rest before or after crossing the Lima River.

The town's position on the route is not incidental. Pilgrims arriving from the south, whether via Barcelos along the main spine of the Portuguese Way or through Braga, converge here to cross the Lima River by the Roman and medieval bridge that has served this purpose for centuries. That bridge remains one of the defining landmarks of the Portuguese Way, and crossing it still carries the same practical necessity it always has.

The hostel also serves pilgrims travelling in the opposite direction, towards Fátima, making Ponte de Lima a meeting point for two distinct pilgrimage traditions. The Serra da Labruja, which pilgrims pass through on the stretch beyond the town towards Galicia, is considered a symbolic landmark of the route and a memorable stage in its own right.
