A small pilgrim-only albergue in the village of Riego de Ambrós, open April to October, offering 26 beds, kitchen facilities, communal dinners, and a garden for €10 per night.
Municipal Albergue
Riego de Ambrós is a small village on the descent from O Cebreiro into the Bierzo valley, sitting along one of the more dramatic and physically demanding stretches of the Camino Francés. The pilgrim hostel here serves as a genuine rest point after the steep drop from Foncebadón and the Cruz de Ferro, before the route continues down toward Molinaseca.
The albergue is owned by the local neighborhood board, the Ambrós Irrigation Neighborhood Board, which gives it an unusually community-rooted character for a pilgrim shelter. It has been operating since 2003 and is run privately under a hospitalero named Olivier. The accommodation is simple and functional: shared bunk rooms arranged in compartments of two and four beds, plus a platform area with mattress spaces for six. There are 26 places in total.
What distinguishes this hostel from many others on the route is the optional communal dinner, offered for 10 euros, which tends to be a draw for pilgrims who want a shared meal after a long day on the trail. Breakfast is also available. The kitchen is free to use for those who prefer to cook independently, and there is a washing machine, garden, and bike storage on site.
The hostel is open from early April through the end of October, with check-in from around 13:30 and a closing time of 21:30. Reservations are accepted, which is worth considering in peak summer months when this descent can see heavy foot traffic.
