See other places to stay in ManjarínManjarín is one of the most unusual stops on the Camino Francés, a near-abandoned hamlet perched high in the Montes de León at around 1,450 metres. Only a handful of people live here, and the settlement would likely have faded entirely from the map were it not for Tomás Martínez, who has run a refuge for pilgrims here since 1993.
Tomás is something of a Camino legend. He has appointed himself a Knight Templar of Ponferrada and maintains a tall cluster of flags and a weathered signpost outside the refuge marking distances to Santiago and Jerusalem, among other destinations. The whole place has an improvised, eccentric quality that pilgrims either find deeply charming or genuinely surprising. Arriving here after a long climb from Rabanal del Camino, walkers are greeted with a bell, hot coffee or tea, and a warm welcome regardless of the hour or season.
The refuge sleeps up to 30 people in shared dormitories and costs five euros including breakfast. It has no running water, no showers, and no sinks. Meals tend to be communal and simple. The setting, however, is remarkable: wide views over the León plateau to the east and the descent toward El Bierzo to the west, often shrouded in mist or wind.
Manjarín sits just before the Cruz de Ferro, one of the most emotionally significant points on the entire Camino. For pilgrims who value character and atmosphere over comfort, it is worth considering as a place to stay rather than simply pass through.
