Albergue Gares

Albergue Gares sits in one of the most strategically significant towns on the entire Camino Francés. Puente la Reina is where the two main Spanish approaches to Santiago de Compostela converge: the French Way coming through Roncesvalles and Pamplona meets the Aragonese route here, and from this point all pilgrims continue west together on a single path. The town takes its name from the remarkable Romanesque bridge spanning the Río Arga, built in the 11th century, likely at the initiative of a Navarrese queen, to ease the crossing for the growing stream of medieval pilgrims.

The town itself preserves much of its medieval character. The main street, Calle Mayor, runs through the historic core and was once lined with services catering to pilgrims, a tradition that continues today. The Church of Santiago, with its striking porch, and the Church of the Crucifix, which houses a striking Y-shaped crucifix brought to Navarre by German knights, are both worth visiting before or after the long walk over that famous bridge.

Opened in 2023, this family-run albergue occupies a quiet position in town while remaining close to the historic center and the main pilgrimage route. It offers covered bike parking, a fully equipped kitchen, and comfortable common areas, along with laundry facilities, free WiFi, and a luggage transport service.
