The Gerekiz AMAGI Hostel sits at the foot of the road beside the hermitage of San Esteban, in the small rural settlement of Gerekiz in the Basque Country of Bizkaia. It has been welcoming pilgrims since 2019 and is exclusively for those walking the route, giving it a focused, community atmosphere rather than the mixed traveler feel of larger establishments.
The hostel offers 30 beds across three shared bedrooms, with prices in the range of 20 to 22 euros including breakfast. A kitchen with basic provisions is available for free use, and dinner can be arranged with advance reservation. Practical amenities include individual lockers, a covered bicycle shelter, a garden, and the option to camp on the grounds. The hostel is also accessible to people with reduced mobility and welcomes pets.
From 2026 the hostel comes under new management, and the current offering includes optional massages, yoga, and pilates sessions on request. The setting next to the San Esteban hermitage adds a quiet, contemplative character to the stop, fitting for a pilgrim rest point in the green hills of rural Bizkaia. The hostel is open seasonally from mid-April to mid-October, with check-in from 3 to 8 in the afternoon.
