About this property

Murias de Rechivaldo is a small village on the Camino de Santiago, sitting just a few kilometers west of Astorga in the province of León. It lies at the beginning of the Maragatería, a distinct cultural region whose people, the Maragatos, were historically known as muleteers and traders who transported goods across the Iberian Peninsula. Their traditional stone architecture and distinctive dress set this area apart from the surrounding Castilian landscape, and some of that character is still visible in the village today.

The municipal albergue here occupies a converted schoolhouse at the edge of the village, a building type that has found a second life across rural Spain as pilgrim infrastructure has grown along the Camino Frances. It is run by the local neighborhood board and managed by a hospitalero named Pedro. The setup is simple and functional: a single shared room with ten low beds, a garden, and a bicycle shed. In summer there is also the option to camp on the grounds.

For pilgrims, Murias de Rechivaldo often serves as a quieter alternative to stopping in Astorga itself, or as an early stage out of the city before the long climb up into the mountains begins. The village sits at roughly 900 meters elevation, and the terrain ahead toward Rabanal del Camino and the Cruz de Ferro is some of the most atmospheric on the entire route. Spending a night here, in a place shaped by centuries of travel and trade, fits naturally into the rhythm of the pilgrimage.
