About this property

The municipal albergue in Rabanal del Camino sits at the entrance to this small stone village, one of the last stops before the long climb to Cruz de Ferro and the high passes of the Montes de León. Rabanal itself has been a significant waypoint on the Camino Francés since medieval times, appearing in the 12th-century pilgrim guide the Codex Calixtinus as a place where pilgrims could rest before tackling the mountains.

The hostel is municipally owned and run, offering 36 beds across two shared dormitories of 10 and 26 places respectively. It includes a free kitchen with microwave and refrigerator, laundry facilities, a garden, and bicycle storage. There is also the option to camp on site for an additional cost. The building is accessible to people with reduced mobility, which is relatively uncommon among village albergues of this size.

Rabanal itself is worth exploring on arrival. The Romanesque church of Santa María, partially restored, hosts Gregorian chant services in the evenings led by the Benedictine monks of the Monastery of San Salvador del Monte Irago, who have had a presence here since 2001. The village also has a handful of bars and a couple of private albergues with restaurants. Most pilgrims arriving here are mentally preparing for the ascent toward Foncebadón the following morning, making it a quieter, more contemplative stop than many towns earlier on the route.
