Albergue Municipal de Santa Irene

The municipal albergue at Santa Irene sits along one of the final stretches of the Camino Francés, roughly 20 kilometres from Santiago de Compostela. For pilgrims who have walked from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port or further, this is often the last night's stop before the cathedral, making it a place charged with a particular mix of exhaustion and anticipation.

The albergue takes its name from the small chapel of Santa Irene nearby, dedicated to a 7th-century martyr whose legend is woven into the landscape of this part of Galicia. According to tradition, Irene was a young woman who was killed and whose body was carried by oxen to a site that later became associated with her veneration. The chapel is modest and easy to miss, but it marks a genuinely old layer of sacred geography along the route.

As a municipal facility, the albergue is run by the Xunta de Galicia and operates on the standard pilgrim credential system. It offers basic but functional accommodation in dormitory-style bunks, with the usual communal facilities. The surroundings are quietly rural, with eucalyptus and oak woodland typical of this part of interior Galicia. The O Pedrouzo area nearby offers more in the way of restaurants and shops for those needing to resupply before the final push into Santiago.
