Albergue Ubaldo Nieto de Alba

Carracedo del Monasterio takes its name from the Monasterio de Santa María de Carracedo, one of the most significant Cistercian monasteries in the Iberian Peninsula, whose ruins stand just outside the village. Founded in 990 by Bermudo II of León, the monastery flourished under royal patronage during the 12th century and became an important center of religious and agricultural life in the Bierzo region. Though now partially in ruins, it remains a compelling site and gives this small village a historical weight disproportionate to its size.

The albergue here sits in a quiet rural setting, offering a genuine respite from the longer stretches of the Camino Francés through El Bierzo. At 20 beds, it is a small, intimate stop, well positioned for pilgrims who prefer to break the roughly 24-kilometer stage between Ponferrada and Villafranca del Bierzo into more manageable sections. The garden and outdoor terrace make it a pleasant place to rest legs and dry gear, while the fireplace in the lounge is a welcome feature for the cooler months when this stretch of the route can be damp and cold.

The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the Bierzo basin, sheltered by mountains and known for its viticulture and fruit cultivation. The area has a noticeably milder microclimate than the Castilian meseta to the east, and pilgrims often remark on the greenness of the terrain here as the route begins its transition toward the hills of Galicia.
