Casa Fernando

BallotaOn the trail

A family-run restaurant and small hotel with over 80 years of history in Ballota, Asturias

3-star
Casa Fernando

About this property

Perched along the historic coastal transit route in the western Asturian village of Ballota, Casa Fernando has served travelers and village residents since the mid-twentieth century. For walkers on the Camino del Norte journeying between Soto de Luiña and Cadavedo, it marks a key waystation where the rural highway meets the rugged Atlantic clifftops.

The property takes its name directly from its founder, Fernando Alonso, who established the business alongside his wife, Leonor, in 1945. In its original mid-century incarnation, Casa Fernando served a double purpose that made it the social nucleus of Ballota: half the premises operated as a village tavern serving wine and cider, while the other half functioned as the local barbershop, where Fernando cut hair between pouring drinks for neighbors. Over the decades, the business transitioned entirely toward food and lodging. In 1997, the founders' son, also named Fernando, and his wife, Josefina Sierra, carried out a major modernization to develop the culinary and hotel offerings. The establishment has remained firmly in family hands through successive generations, with family members Jose Luis and Ainhoa continuing its operations in recent years.

Today, the accommodation operates as an intimate seven-room rural hotel. The guestrooms are configured primarily as twins and doubles, each equipped with its own private bathroom, television, desk, and wireless internet access. Given the modest room count, the environment remains quiet at night compared to larger roadside complexes, offering weary long-distance walkers a restful, private alternative to communal pilgrim dormitories. Practical amenities on site include private vehicle parking, luggage storage, and daily housekeeping.

The culinary side of Casa Fernando remains central to its reputation in the region. The dining room focuses squarely on slow-cooked Asturian cuisine, utilizing ingredients from regional fisheries and pastures. House specialties include traditional fabada asturiana, braised octopus with vegetables, stuffed cabbage rolls known locally as repollo relleno, baked salt cod, and local cuts of Asturian beef, finished with caramelized arroz con leche. The accompanying bar features a large counter space and a sheltered outdoor terrace that opens during warmer months.

For hikers and pilgrims planning their day, the bar typically opens early on weekday mornings, around 7:30 AM, providing an opportunity for coffee, breakfast, and a passport stamp before hitting the trail toward Cadavedo or Luarca. The hotel and restaurant operate on distinct seasonal timetables; the dining room closes on Saturdays during winter months, and the entire property often observes a scheduled seasonal closure in late autumn, making advance booking essential. If arriving with daylight to spare, take the short walk north from the property down toward the secluded beach at Río Cabo, where the river meets the Bay of Biscay beneath towering coastal cliffs.
