Donativo Albergue del Polideportivo de Gorostiza

The Gorostiza pilgrim hostel occupies a farmhouse-style building in the Cruces neighborhood of Barakaldo, sitting about 200 meters off the main road and roughly 2 kilometers from the town center. Opened in 2017, it is municipally owned and run by the Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago in Bizkaia, with volunteer hospitaleros managing day-to-day operations during the season.

The hostel is exclusively for pilgrims and operates on a donation basis, with 20 places spread across two dormitory rooms and a hall with additional beds. It runs from May through September, with check-in from 3:00 PM and a closing time of 9:30 PM. No advance reservations are taken, so arrival timing matters.

What sets this stop apart is the attached sports center. Pilgrims who present their credential get free access to the swimming pool, sauna, and showers, which makes it a notably good place to recover after a long day on the trail. A shared kitchen with microwave and refrigerator, a dryer, and covered bicycle storage round out the practical amenities. For walkers coming through the industrial outskirts of Bilbao, the combination of green surroundings, a farmhouse setting, and access to proper sports facilities makes Gorostiza a more comfortable rest point than its location might initially suggest.
