Donativo Albergue Parroquial de Zabaldika

The parish hostel in Zabaldika sits just beside the Romanesque church of San Esteban, a small stone building that has watched pilgrims pass through this quiet Navarrese hamlet for centuries. The village itself is easy to miss from the main Camino Francés route, as the hostel lies about 200 metres off the road, but those who make the short detour find something quite different from the larger albergues in nearby Pamplona.

The hostel opened in 2013 and is run under the auspices of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with day-to-day hospitality provided by volunteer hosts from the Spanish Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago (FEAACS). It operates as a donativo, meaning pilgrims contribute what they can for a bed and half board, which includes a communal dinner and breakfast. The three dormitory rooms hold 18 pilgrims in total, with a mix of bunk beds and lower beds across rooms of different sizes.

One of the more distinctive aspects of staying here is the evening prayer held at sunset, often in or around the adjacent church. It reflects the contemplative character of the place, which leans more toward the spiritual tradition of the Camino than toward the social bustle of larger pilgrim hostels. For walkers who have just come through Pamplona or are approaching it, Zabaldika offers an unusually calm stop, and the church of San Esteban itself is worth a few minutes of attention for its simple Romanesque stonework. The hostel is open from mid-April to mid-October and does not accept advance reservations.
