Hostel Río Arga Ibaia sits at the entrance to Zubiri, right beside the medieval bridge that gives the town much of its character. For pilgrims arriving on the Camino Francés, this is one of the first overnight stops after crossing the Pyrenees from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, typically reached after a long and demanding first day on the trail.
The hostel opened in 2014 and is privately run by Santiago. It sits next to the Puente de la Rabia, a Romanesque bridge whose name translates to "bridge of rabies." Local legend holds that animals driven around the central pillar of the bridge would be cured of rabies, a tradition that persisted for centuries and reflects the deep intertwining of folk belief and pilgrimage culture in this part of Navarre. The Río Arga flows beneath it, and the setting is genuinely pleasant after a hard day's walk.
The hostel is open year-round and caters to a mix of pilgrims and other travelers, with 20 beds in shared dormitories as well as a private double room. Facilities are practical and well-suited to walkers: a free kitchen, washer and dryer, individual lockers, and sheets and towels included in the price. Pets and bicycles are also accommodated, which is useful for those doing the route with a dog or by bike. Reservations are recommended outside of peak season.
