Albergue Viejo Lucas

Albergue Viejo Lucas occupies a former boarding school in the small Cantabrian village of Cóbreces, sitting at the entrance to the settlement along the Camino del Norte. The building's institutional past gives it a scale and character rarely found in purpose-built pilgrim hostels: a library, games room, auditorium, sports field, and a large outdoor patio are all part of the complex, making it a genuinely comfortable place to rest for a night or longer.

The hostel opened in 2014 under private management and has capacity for 148 pilgrims in shared dormitory bunks, alongside a small number of private rooms. Breakfast is included in the price, which puts it at reasonable value for the Cantabrian coast. Reservations are accepted, which is worth considering in peak summer months when this stretch of the northern Camino sees steady traffic.

Cóbreces itself is a quiet agricultural village in the municipality of Alfoz de Lloredo, known locally for its Cistercian monastery, the Abadía de Viaceli, which sits just above the village and has been home to a monastic community since the early twentieth century. The surrounding countryside is typical green Cantabrian coast terrain, with the sea not far to the north. For pilgrims walking between Comillas and Cobreces, the albergue is an easy landmark to find, positioned right at the road into town.
