About This Stage
A demanding coastal stage following the Basque cliffs west from San Sebastian. The route climbs repeatedly over headlands before descending to beaches and coves, with the relentless elevation changes adding up to over 1,400 metres of climbing. The scenery is consistently spectacular.
The path passes through the fishing village of Orio and along dramatic clifftop sections with views of the Cantabrian Sea. The Basque coastline here is wild and beautiful, with Atlantic swells crashing against the rocky shore. The Flysch geological formations near Zarautz are internationally significant.
Zarautz is a lively Basque surf town with the longest beach in the Basque Country. The town has excellent pintxos bars, good accommodation, and a relaxed seaside atmosphere. The surfing culture adds a youthful energy.
