About This Stage

A classic Meseta stage across the open plateau, with the ruins of the Convento de San Anton providing a dramatic waypoint mid-stage. The Gothic archway spanning the road is one of the most photographed ruins on the Camino, and pilgrims traditionally pass beneath it.

The walking continues across flat, open terrain with long views and minimal shade. The approach to Castrojeriz is scenic, with the town stretched along a ridge below a ruined castle that dominates the skyline from kilometres away.

Castrojeriz is a long, thin town with a surprisingly rich history and several notable churches. The ruined castle above town offers panoramic views across the Meseta. Services are adequate with several albergues, restaurants, and small shops.

Terrain: Flat Meseta paths, dry agricultural tracks, gentle valley approach

Local tip

Hontanas to Castrojeriz

The Convento de San Antón is one of the most significant medieval sites on the Camino Frances. Founded in the 12th century by Alfonso VII and built out in its current Gothic form during the 14th and 15th centuries, the complex was the Spanish headquarters of the Order of Saint Anthony, a French religious order dedicated to treating sufferers of ergotism, a devastating disease known across medieval Europe as Saint Anthony's Fire.

Ergotism was caused by a fungus that contaminated rye grain. Its victims suffered hallucinations, violent convulsions, and a progressive loss of circulation that caused limbs to blacken and die. The Antonine monks became the foremost specialists in treating the condition, and their monasteries served as hospital-pilgrim hospices strung across the pilgrimage routes of Europe. The Tau cross, their distinctive symbol shaped like the letter T, can still be seen carved into the stonework of the surviving portico and arch.

At its height, the monastery was one of the most powerful religious complexes in Castile, operating under royal protection. The shields of the Spanish crown are visible in the stonework of the church portico, a mark of the patronage it received from successive monarchs. The complex included a church, a pilgrim hospital, residential quarters for the monks, and agricultural land. It functioned as a place of healing, hospitality, and religious life for several centuries, welcoming sick and healthy pilgrims alike as they passed through on their way to Santiago.

The order was suppressed in the late 18th century and the monastery was formally closed during the Spanish disentailment of church properties in the 19th century, a period in which the state seized and sold religious landholdings across the country. The buildings passed into private hands, fell out of use, and were gradually reclaimed by the landscape. What remains today are the ruins of the 14th and 15th century church and its entrance portico, including two tall Gothic arches through which the Camino itself now passes.

That detail is worth pausing on. The path does not pass beside the ruins or near them. It passes through them. Pilgrims today walk the same line that medieval travellers walked, under the same stone arches, through what was once the entrance to one of the most important pilgrim hospitals in Spain.
