About This Stage

A long but flat stage through the heart of La Rioja's wine country. The route passes through a landscape dominated by vineyards, with the famous Navarrete pottery workshops and the hilltop town of Ventosa offering variety along the way.

The walking is physically easy but the distance and lack of shade make it a tiring day in hot weather. The terrain is almost entirely flat, crossing the broad Ebro valley through endless rows of vines. The famous Rioja bodegas are visible from the path, and the region's red earth gives the landscape a distinctive colour.

Najera is a historic town straddling the Najerilla River, with the impressive Monastery of Santa Maria la Real built into the red sandstone cliffs. The monastery contains royal tombs and a beautiful cloister. The town has good services and a pleasant old quarter.

Terrain: Flat vineyard paths, agricultural roads, some paved sections, exposed terrain
