About Uterga

Uterga sits in the gentle valley below Alto del Perdón, and for most pilgrims it arrives as a relief after the long descent from the ridge. But the village is older than its quiet appearance suggests.

By 1280, Uterga was already recorded as a royal lordship paying an annual tax to the Crown of Navarra, placing it within the administrative and fiscal network that the medieval kingdom used to consolidate control over the Camino corridor. The Monastery of Santa María de Irache, one of the most powerful religious institutions in medieval Navarra, held land in the area from at least the 12th century, which points to the village having agricultural and strategic value well before that tax record was written down. Irache's interest in lands along the Camino was not coincidental: the monastery benefited directly from pilgrim traffic and worked to extend its influence across the villages and estates of this stretch of the route.

The Church of La Asunción, built in the 16th century, is the main surviving monument in the village. Its construction falls in a period when many Navarrese villages were rebuilding or expanding their parish churches, often using local sandstone, after the relative stability that followed Navarra's incorporation into the Crown of Castile in 1515. The church stands close to the Camino route and is worth a brief pause.

For pilgrims today, Uterga offers accommodation, food, and a water fountain in a stone village that has changed little in outward character. Services are limited compared to Pamplona or Puente la Reina, so outside the main season it is worth checking what is open before arriving with expectations.
