About Riego de Ambrós

Riego de Ambros sits in the province of Leon on the steep western descent from the Montes de Leon toward El Bierzo. The village sits at around 920 metres altitude in the lower mountain zone, between El Acebo and Molinaseca. The Camino runs through the heart of the village along the slate-paved street.

Riego de Ambros preserves the traditional stone-and-wood architecture of the El Bierzo highlands, with slate-roofed houses built around steep narrow streets. The village name combines Riego, from the Spanish for irrigation or watered land, with Ambros, a name of uncertain origin. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. The setting is forested and the air, after the mountain pass, is cooler and damper than the meseta behind.

Services are limited. There is an albergue, the Albergue Riego de Ambros, and a bar-restaurant.
