Sahagún → Mansilla de las Mulas

One of the longest stages, covering 36.5 kilometres of flat Meseta terrain. The distance is the challenge here rather than elevation, and the route crosses relentlessly flat country with scattered small villages providing rest stops.

Two route variants are available: the main road route through Calzada del Coto and the quieter Real Camino Frances via Calzadilla de los Hermanillos. The latter is more isolated but more peaceful. Either way, the walking is flat and exposed with minimal shade.

Mansilla de las Mulas is a pleasant walled town on the Esla River with well-preserved medieval gates and walls. The town has good services and marks the transition from the deep Meseta to the approach to Leon. The old town inside the walls has a charming character.
