A gentle stage through classic Galician countryside of green pastures, stone villages, and chestnut forests. Two route variants are available: via the historic Benedictine monastery at Samos (longer but culturally rich) or via the hamlet of San Xil (shorter and more scenic through the hills).
The Samos variant passes through one of the oldest monasteries in the Western world, with a massive Baroque complex and historic cloister. The San Xil route offers more intimate walking through tiny Galician hamlets. Both routes converge before Sarria.
Sarria is a significant Camino town as the most popular starting point for pilgrims walking the minimum 100 kilometres required for the Compostela certificate. The trail becomes dramatically busier from here. The town has extensive services and accommodation geared towards the high volume of pilgrims.

Triacastela is a Galician town in Lugo, named for three medieval castles that once stood here (now gone). Pilgrims traditionally carried a stone from the local quarry to Castaneda for the firing of lime at Santiago Cathedral. Has full services.
Furela is a small Galician hamlet in Lugo on the San Xil variant of the Camino, between San Xil and Pintin. Has a small bar-restaurant.
Pintin is a small Galician hamlet in Lugo on the shared stretch of the Camino after the Samos and San Xil variants converge. Has a bar-restaurant and a small albergue. No shop, pharmacy, or ATM.
Aguiada is a tiny Galician hamlet in Lugo east of Sarria where the Samos and San Xil variants of the Camino converge.
Sarria is a Galician town in Lugo founded by Alfonso IX in 1230. As the closest town beyond the 100km Compostela threshold, it is the busiest pilgrim entry point on the entire Camino. Has full town services.
