About Fonfría

Fonfria sits in the province of Lugo at around 1,290 metres altitude on the gentle descent from the Alto do Poio. The Camino runs through the heart of the small mountain village. The setting is high pasture and forest, the air notably cooler and damper than the high pass behind.

The village name combines the Galician fonte, meaning fountain or spring, with fria, cold - a literal reference to the cold spring water that has flowed in the village for centuries. The parish church and a small cluster of houses make up the village. The Albergue A Reboleira, the village's principal pilgrim albergue, has built its dining hall in the style of a traditional Galician roundhouse, evoking the pre-Roman Celtic palloza architecture that survives further east at O Cebreiro.

Services in Fonfria are limited but useful. There are albergues including the A Reboleira, bar-restaurants, and limited grocery supplies through the albergues. There is no shop, no pharmacy, and no ATM.
