About Estella-Lizarra
Estella-Lizarra is one of the main towns on the Camino Francés in Navarra, between Villatuerta and Ayegui. It sits on the Ega River and is a popular overnight stop for pilgrims walking west from Puente la Reina.
The town grew strongly because of the Camino. It was developed in the 11th century as a planned settlement for merchants and pilgrims, close to the older Basque settlement of Lizarra. By the Middle Ages, Estella had become one of the most important towns in the Kingdom of Navarra, with churches, bridges, noble houses, trading streets, and pilgrim hospitals.
For pilgrims today, Estella-Lizarra is a full service stop. It has albergues, hotels, restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, pharmacies, ATMs, laundries, and outdoor or general shops. It is a good place to rest, resupply, eat properly, and take care of errands before continuing toward Los Arcos.
The old town is worth exploring if you have time. Key sights include the Church of San Pedro de la Rúa, the Church of San Miguel, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Palace of the Kings of Navarra. The town is larger and busier than the villages before it, but it is one of the places where the Camino’s medieval history is still easy to see in the streets.
