About Calzadilla de la Cueza

Calzadilla de la Cueza sits in the province of Palencia on the Tierra de Campos plateau. It is a tiny single-street farming village of around 50 inhabitants, but it occupies an outsized position on the Camino Frances because of where it sits on the route.

The village name refers to its position on a calzada, a Roman road, and the Cueza stream that runs nearby. The Camino into the village follows the line of the Via Aquitana, the Roman road that connected Astorga to Bordeaux. The church of San Martin preserves a 16th-century retable. There is no other significant monumental heritage. Pilgrims have stopped here for centuries simply because of the geography of the route.

Services are limited but functional. The Albergue Camino Real, at the end of the main street, has 80 dormitory beds, a restaurant, bar, and a small swimming pool. The municipal albergue is smaller and simpler. There is one hotel, the Hostal Camino Real. The village has a single small shop that may keep limited hours. There is no pharmacy, no ATM, and no permanent medical service. The nearest full services are back in Carrion or onward in Sahagun.
