About Nájera

Nájera is a major Camino town in La Rioja, between Ventosa and Azofra. For pilgrims, it is one of the main overnight stops on this section, with plenty of services and a memorable setting beneath red sandstone cliffs. The name is commonly linked to the Arabic “Naxara,” meaning something like “between cliffs,” which fits the landscape around the old town.

Nájera has a major place in regional history. It was once the capital of the Kingdom of Nájera-Pamplona and became an important royal and religious centre. The Monastery of Santa María la Real is the town’s main historic site, with its royal pantheon, cloister, and dramatic position below the cliffs. The town also has old streets, bridges, riverside walks, and a strong connection to both the Camino and the history of Navarra, La Rioja, and Castile.

For pilgrims, Nájera is a full-service stop. It has albergues, hotels, restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, pharmacies, ATMs, laundries, and general shops. It is a good place to rest, resupply, eat properly, and stay overnight before continuing toward Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

The must-see is the Monastery of Santa María la Real. If you have the energy after walking, it is worth taking the time to go inside rather than only seeing the town as a practical overnight stop.

Things to Do in Nájera

Sightseeing

Visit the Monasterio de Santa Maria la Real

Founded in the 11th century, this monastery is one of the most important religious buildings in La Rioja. The Royal Pantheon inside contains the tombs of the Kings and Queens of Navarra, Leon, and Castilla. The late Gothic cloister, known as the Claustro de los Caballeros (Cloister of the Knights), is exceptional. Allow at least an hour.

History

Explore the Cave Church

Behind the monastery, carved into the red sandstone cliff, is a small cave church where the original statue of the Virgin was said to have been found by a king while hunting. The cave is atmospheric and dimly lit, with a sense of ancient reverence that predates the monastery above it.

Relaxation

Walk Along the Rio Najerilla

The river runs through the centre of town, with the red sandstone cliffs rising dramatically on one side and the old town on the other. Walk along the riverbank in the evening light when the cliffs glow. Simple and beautiful.

Food & Drink

Try Rioja Wine and Local Tapas

Najera sits at the heart of Rioja wine country. The bars along the main street serve excellent local wine by the glass along with simple tapas. Try the patatas a la riojana (potatoes braised with chorizo and peppers), a classic Riojan dish that is cheap, filling, and perfect after a long walk.

Sightseeing

Day Trip to San Millan de la Cogolla

Approximately 18 km south of Najera, the twin UNESCO World Heritage monasteries of Suso and Yuso are considered the birthplace of the Spanish language. The earliest written words in both Spanish and Basque were found here. A taxi from Najera costs around 20 euros each way, or there is a bus service. Worth the detour if you have a rest day.
