About This Stage
A moderate stage climbing gradually out of the Najerilla valley through rolling agricultural terrain to the historic town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The landscape transitions from vineyards to mixed agriculture as the route gains elevation.
The walking passes through the village of Azofra and across open countryside with good views back towards the Sierra de la Demanda mountains. The terrain is gentle with no major climbs, making this a manageable day after the long flat stage from Logrono.
Santo Domingo de la Calzada is one of the great Camino towns. Its cathedral famously houses a live rooster and hen in a Gothic cage, commemorating the miracle of the hanged innocent. Santo Domingo himself built the bridge, road, and hospital that gave the town its name ('of the causeway'). The town has excellent services and a charming medieval centre.
Terrain: Rolling agricultural paths, vineyard trails, gentle climbs, village cobblestones
