About Muruzábal

Muruzábal is a small village in Navarra on the Camino Francés, between Uterga and Obanos. It sits in the Valdizarbe area, on the approach to Puente la Reina.

The village has a long history and was once a royal lordship. In 1407, King Carlos III of Navarra included Muruzábal in the viscounty created for his brother, Leonel of Navarra. It later became a separate villa with its own civil jurisdiction in the 17th century.

For pilgrims, Muruzábal is a useful stop after the descent from Alto del Perdón. It has accommodation, food options, and a quieter village feel than nearby Puente la Reina. The main local sight is the Church of San Esteban, a Gothic church with later additions and a notable portico.

Muruzábal is also the turnoff for Santa María de Eunate, one of the most distinctive Romanesque churches near the Camino. The detour adds extra walking, but many pilgrims consider it worthwhile for the church’s unusual design, isolated setting, and strong Camino associations.
