About Obanos
Obanos is a historic village in Navarra on the Camino Francés, between Muruzábal and Puente la Reina. It is best known as the place where pilgrims from the Camino Francés and Camino Aragonés come together before continuing toward Puente la Reina.
The village has a strong Camino identity. Its streets and stone houses reflect the traditional architecture of this part of Navarra, and the main square is centred around the Church of San Juan Bautista. The current church was rebuilt in the early 20th century, although it preserved parts of the older Gothic church, including its 14th-century doorway.
Obanos is also known for the legend of Santa Felicia and San Guillén, one of the most famous stories linked to the Camino in Navarra. The story tells of a noble pilgrim who chose a humble religious life after walking to Santiago, and her brother, whose anger and later repentance became part of local Camino tradition.
For pilgrims today, Obanos is a useful stop just before Puente la Reina. It has places to eat and drink, and a quieter feel than the larger town ahead. Many pilgrims pass through briefly, but it is worth slowing down for the historic centre, the church, and the sense of arrival as the two Camino routes join.
