About Zariquiegui

Zariquiegui, also written as Zarikiegui, is a small village in Navarra on the Camino Francés, between Cizur Menor and Alto del Perdón.

The village sits at the foot of the Sierra del Perdón, making it an important rest point before the climb to one of the most famous viewpoints on this part of the Camino. For pilgrims leaving Pamplona, Zariquiegui is often the last proper village before the route heads up toward the ridge.

Zariquiegui has a long Camino history. Records from 1280 mention a monastery called San Salvador de Zariquiegui, owned by the Navarrese Crown, which served pilgrims passing through the area. That monastery has disappeared, but the village’s Camino role is still visible today.

The main historic sight is the Church of San Andrés. Its Romanesque core dates from the 13th century, though it was altered in later centuries. The most notable surviving feature is the Romanesque doorway, with carved capitals and a chi-rho symbol above the entrance.

For pilgrims today, Zariquiegui is practical and well placed. It has pilgrim accommodation, a bar or food option, and a chance to refill or rest before the exposed climb to Alto del Perdón. Services are limited compared with Pamplona, so it is still worth planning ahead, especially outside the main season.
