About El Acebo De San Miguel

El Acebo de San Miguel sits in the province of Leon at around 1,150 metres altitude on the western slopes of the Montes de Leon, the first sustained village in the descent from Cruz de Ferro into El Bierzo. The Camino runs through the heart of the village along the steep mountain road. The setting is dramatically different from the meseta behind: forested slopes, slate roofs, mountain rivers heard below in the valleys.

El Acebo is named for the holly tree (acebo in Spanish) that grows in these mountains, paired with a dedication to Saint Michael, the parish patron. The traditional architecture is stone with wooden upper balconies, a vernacular style suited to the wet mountain climate and different from the flat-roofed stone of the Maragateria above. A roadside memorial at the edge of the village marks the spot where a German cyclist died on the descent in the 1980s, with a metal bicycle sculpture maintained in his memory. The village has been a Camino stop for centuries, sheltering pilgrims on the descent from the high pass.

El Acebo has reasonable services for a mountain village. There are albergues including the parish-run La Casa del Peregrino and private albergues, hotels, bar-restaurants, and a small shop. There is no pharmacy or ATM. Many pilgrims overnight here to break the long descent from Foncebadon into Ponferrada.
