About Foncebadón
Foncebadon is a once-abandoned mountain hamlet near the highest point of the Camino Frances, now partially restored to serve pilgrims. The village sits at approximately 1,500 metres altitude.
There are a few albergues and cafes. The atmosphere is atmospheric and slightly wild, with some buildings still in ruins alongside the restored ones.
Just beyond Foncebadon stands the Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross), the most famous landmark on the Camino Frances. Pilgrims traditionally carry a stone from home and leave it at the base of the cross, symbolising the release of burdens. The simple iron cross on its tall wooden pole, atop a cairn of thousands of stones left by pilgrims over centuries, is one of the most emotionally powerful moments on the route.
