Zubiri

The medieval "Bridge of Rabies" marks the entrance to Zubiri. Legend says that any animal led three times around the central pillar of the bridge would be cured of rabies. The bridge spans the Rio Arga and is one of the most photographed spots on the early Camino.

After the long descent from the Pyrenees, the riverside in Zubiri is a welcome rest spot. Find a bench or a patch of grass by the water and soak your feet. The sound of the river and the shade of the trees make this one of the simplest but most satisfying moments of the first few days.

You are in Navarra, and the local sidra (cider) is worth trying. The bars in Zubiri are simple but friendly. Order a cider with a plate of pintxos and swap stories with fellow pilgrims about the Pyrenees crossing.

If you have energy left, the small village of Larrasoana is just 5 km further along the river. It has a beautifully preserved medieval bridge and a quieter atmosphere than Zubiri. A gentle afternoon walk with no significant climbs.
