About Mansilla de las Mulas

Mansilla de las Mulas sits in the province of Leon on the banks of the river Esla. It is a walled medieval town and the point where the two variants of the Camino Frances rejoin: the southern route through Bercianos del Real Camino and El Burgo Ranero, and the northern Camino Real through Calzadilla de los Hermanillos. The Camino enters through one of the surviving medieval gates and runs through the heart of the old town.

The town was founded in 1181 by King Fernando II of Leon as a fortified Camino stop, with substantial 12th-century walls built to defend pilgrims and the road itself. Long stretches of those walls are still standing, with cubo towers spaced along them, and the four original gateways into the town remain identifiable. The second half of the name, de las Mulas, refers to the mule trade: from the late Middle Ages until the 19th century, Mansilla was the largest mule market in northern Spain, with thousands of animals changing hands at the annual fair. A bronze statue of a mule at the entrance to the town commemorates this. The principal religious building is the Iglesia de Santa Maria, and the former Convento de San Agustin now houses the Museo Etnografico Provincial, the ethnographic museum for the province of Leon.

Mansilla has the full range of services for pilgrims. There are albergues including the municipal Albergue de Peregrinos and private albergues, plus hotels, hostales, restaurants, cafes, bars, supermarkets, pharmacies, ATMs, and medical services. The town has a bus stop with connections to Leon. Most pilgrims overnight here before the short walk into Leon city the following day.

Things to Do in Mansilla de las Mulas

Sightseeing

Walk the Medieval Walls

Mansilla retains significant stretches of its 12th-century walls, some of the best preserved medieval fortifications in the province of Leon. Walk along the outside of the walls and through the old gates. The South Gate (Arco de la Concepcion) is particularly impressive. These walls once enclosed a thriving market town that served as the last major stop before Leon.

Relaxation

Explore the Plaza del Grano

A charming small square with a distinctive cobbled surface made of river stones, unlike anything you have walked on so far. There is a fountain, a few benches, and a cafe or two. In the evening the square fills with locals taking their paseo (evening walk). A good place to sit and feel the rhythm of a small Spanish town.

Sightseeing

Visit the Iglesia de Santa Maria

A 13th-century church with a mix of Romanesque and Gothic elements. The interior is simple but the carved doorway and the stone work are worth a look. If you have been walking through tiny villages for days, Mansilla's churches feel like a step up in scale that hints at the grandeur of Leon, now just one stage away.

Food & Drink

Try Cecina de Leon

You are now in the province of Leon, and the local speciality is cecina, air-dried and smoked beef that is similar to bresaola but with a distinctive smoky flavour. Order it sliced thin with a drizzle of olive oil and a glass of local wine. It appears on every menu from here to the mountains. The bars along the main street all serve it.

Camino Moment

Anticipate Leon

Mansilla is the last quiet stop before Leon, one of the great cities of the Camino. Tomorrow you will walk 18 km into a city of 125,000 people, with a cathedral that will take your breath away. Tonight, enjoy the calm of a small walled town. Have a long dinner, go to bed early, and savour the contrast that is coming.
