Chantada (Paderne)

Chantada is a scattered rural parish in the municipality of Paderne, reached at the top of the steep Costa de Matacabalos. Paderne has documented links to the Camino going back to the 12th century, and around 1445 a pilgrim hospital was founded at Guende in the parish of Souto, part of Chantada. When the scholar Father Martín Sarmiento passed through in 1745, only its remains were left.

The route continues on quiet asphalt through the hamlets of Souto, Gas, where there is a fountain, and San Paio to the 12th-century Romanesque church of San Martiño de Tiobre. Its garden and churchyard make a peaceful last break, with panoramic views over Betanzos and the Mandeo valley. From there it's a steep descent into town, passing the 16th-century sanctuary of Nosa Señora do Camiño before crossing the Ponte Vella.
