Águeda → Albergaria-a-Velha

About This Stage

The shortest stage on the Central route, passing through eucalyptus forest and quiet countryside via Mourisca do Vouga and Serem de Cima. The route crosses two medieval bridges, the Ponte do Marnel and the old bridge over the Rio Vouga, both testaments to the centuries of pilgrim traffic along this path.

This is an easy, relaxed day that many pilgrims use to catch up on rest or simply enjoy a leisurely afternoon. The landscape mixes eucalyptus woodland with small farms, and the old pilgrim road is still traceable in sections despite parts being absorbed by modern roads.

Albergaria-a-Velha takes its name from an albergaria (pilgrim inn) founded in 1172 by Queen D. Teresa, which may itself have been preceded by a Roman mansione (road station). The town's pilgrim heritage spans nearly a millennium. The Santuario de Nossa Senhora do Socorro and the Albergue de Peregrinos Rainha D. Teresa continue this tradition. Good services including supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants are available.

Terrain: Gentle rural roads, forest tracks, some paved village roads
